Contretemps is a cafeteria in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, serving specialty coffee, matchas, and cold drinks in a quiet, unhurried atmosphere.
In music, a contretemps is an off-beat note. The brand is built on this idea: a café that exists slightly out of pace with the city, a place to slow down and breathe. The logo embeds the concept directly, C O N T R E / T E M P S split across two lines, where the shared T acts as the point of off-beat, disrupting the typographic rhythm just as an off-beat disrupts a musical phrase. A deep oxblood palette and wide letter-spacing do the rest: quiet, unhurried, never loud.
